Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article examines the correspondence of Brazilian writer Erico Verissimo, with particular attention to his letters exchanged with American philosopher James Feibleman, in order to explore how Verissimo articulated his literary, intellectual, and ethical engagement within an inter-American network of cultural exchange. By analyzing the functions and meanings of epistolary writing in both Verissimo’s fiction and his everyday practice, the study argues that letters served as a privileged space for building sociability, negotiating authorial identity, and reflecting on aesthetic, political, and intellectual debates of the twentieth century. Drawing on this epistolary corpus, the article shows how letter-writing embodies Verissimo’s ethical, democratic, and cosmopolitan orientation while shedding light on essential dimensions of his literary work and his public role as an intellectual.
