VIAJAR É CONFRONTAR-SE: CHOQUES CULTURAIS EM CRÔNICAS DE JOÃO UBALDO RIBEIRO
Abstract
Abstract: A trip, as geographic transit, also implies in cultural and identity journeys. This article stems from a bibliographic and interdisciplinary review about culture and identity in their intersections with language and traveling literature, to analyse the short stories “Pequenos choques (Quatro anotações de um visitante distraído)”, “Storkwinkel 12, Rio” and “Os índios de Berlim”. João Ubaldo Ribeiro’s stories illustrate the cultural shock that characterizes the trip of a Brazilian man to the recently reunified German territory after the Cold War. The narrator’s speech and the language exchange portrayed indicate a new identity that varies between the figures of the tourist and the traveller. On the whole, there is a prevalence in the traveller identity that resembles the anthropologist in the search of understanding himself through the foreign culture.
