O SILENCIAMENTO DA “LITERATURA ORAL” NOS ESTUDOS LITERÁRIOS

Abstract

Resumo: Neste ensaio desenvolvem-se reflexões sobre a literatura oral enquanto expressão pouco explorada pelos estudos literários, buscando-se compreender alguns dos principais aspectos dessa vertente das artes verbais, bem como as causas para essa obliteração. Por um lado, o preconceito inerente às culturas letradas com relação às culturas iletradas justifica o desinteresse generalizado pela literatura oral, que foi tratada, desde finais do século XIX, como categoria folclórica. Por outro lado, existem aporias próprias ao campo de saber em causa, visto que o instrumental teórico – escrito – tenta dar conta de um repertório que lhe é alheio – o das oralidades. A partir de um arcabouço teórico variado, que inclui alguns autores da teoria da literatura – como Wellek e Waren (1976) – e estudiosos de outras disciplinas – como Zumthor (1997), Walter Ong (1998) e Camara Cascudo –, analisaremos os principais conceitos referentes a essa matéria, que exemplificaremos com os estudos de Deífilo Gurgel (2012) sobre os romanceiros do Rio Grande do Norte, e com uma análise inédita dos poemas de Sebastião Rodrigues, o Tião Ferreira (2002).

Abstract: In this essay I reflect on oral literature as an expression rarely explored by literary studies, seeking to understand some of its main aspects, as well as the causes for this obliteration. On the one hand, the prejudice inherent in literate cultures in relation to illiterate cultures justifies the general lack of interest in oral literature, which has been treated, since the end of the 19^th century, as a folkloric category. On the other hand, there are aporias inherent to the field of knowledge itself, since the theoretical instrument is a written form trying to account for a remote repertoire, the orality. Based on a varied theoretical framework, which includes some authors from the theory of literature – such as Wellek and Waren (1976) – and scholars from other disciplines – such as Zumthor (1997), Walter Ong (1998) and Camara Cascudo –, I try to analyze the main concepts referring to this matter, which I exemplify with the studies of Deífilo Gurgel (2012) on the oral romancers of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), and with an unprecedented analysis of the poems of Sebastião Rodrigues (2002), from South Minas Gerais (Brazil).
