Resumo

O artigo trata da presença e influência de estrangeiros e diplomatas ingleses, franceses e espanhóis em Portugal dos tempos do rei dom José I entre 1750 e 1763. Exibe figuras inglesas agudas e engenhosas como os embaixadores Abraham Castres e Edward Hay, os chanceleres Willian Pitt e conde de Egremont, o oficial James O’Hara, afamado lord Tyrawley. Discorre sobre personalidades francesas decisivas como o conde de Merle, a madame Pompadour, o ministro Jacques O’Dunne, os chanceleres François-Joachim Pierre Bernis e Étienne-François Choiseul. Informa da relação conflituosa e cooperativa entre eles e os secretários do rei português.
