Resumo

Durante as décadas de 1980 e 1990, os Estados Unidos foram palco de intensas “guerras culturais”. Um dos campos de batalha privilegiados nesta luta para definir a América foi o debate público acerca do passado do Oeste norte-americano e seus significados para aquele conturbado presente. Desta maneira, naquela conjuntura, narrativas rivais lutavam por legitimidade no espaço público, com o Oeste tornando-se a sinédoque da nação. O artigo busca desvendar alguns destes significados, enfatizando principalmente seus sentidos políticos.
