Call for papers. Dossier: THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE JESUIT MISSIONS: THE WRITING AND THE TIME

2019-10-09

The period for submitting articles to the dossier "THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE JESUIT MISSIONS: THE WRITING AND THE TIME" is open until January 10th, 2020.

Studies of the missionary spaces in which the Jesuits acted have undergone a significant renewal since the late twentieth century, when the traditional approaches to praise or detract from the Jesuits and their missions were overcome. In the same vein, there has since been a fruitful expansion of themes and approaches for the study of missions, for example, from perspectives that directed their interest to cultural and symbolic issues. This movement was then joined by another equally renewing movement, capable of producing a substantial change in the perspective by which the theme is analyzed, concerning the recovery, for non-European populations, of an active place in the configuration of the symbolic and material elements that constituted such a story. It was fundamentally, in the case of the Americas, as Celestino de Almeida (2010) said, to bring indigenous populations from the “backstage to the stage”. Thus, we can say that the study of missionary spaces remains coated with analytical density in the present moment, installing, among other things, fruitful discussions about the processes of cultural contact and their unfolding. The dossier intends to be a space for broadening such debate based on the contribution of experts in the field.
