Comparison between the past and the contemporary
the impact of TEN and afrofuturism on the promotion of brazilian racial equility
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of the Teatro Experimental do Negro (TEN) and the Afrofuturist movement in Brazil, highlighting the implementation of anti-racist policies through communication processes. The objective is to analyze how TEN and Afrofuturism influence socio-spatial trajectories in the country, promoting the appreciation of black culture and the fight for racial equality. Using documentary and historical analysis, the research examines the plays The Emperor Jones (1945) and Anti-memories of an interrupted crossing (2018), exploring symbolic narratives about identity and memory. The results highlight the importance of black theater engaged in the discussion of racial issues and the reconfiguration of cultural and social representations in Brazil. It is concluded that TEN and afrofuturism contribute to the affirmation of black identity and the promotion of black worldviews in the arts, positively impacting socio-spatial trajectories in the country. We also understand that TEN was a historical condition for the emergence of the Afrofuturist movement in Brazil in the 2010s.
