The guarani communities in the independence conflicts in the space of Rio da Prata (1810-1821)
Abstract
Linking to the perspective of “Nova História Indígena”, this article seeks, firstly, to demonstrate the important position occupied by the indigenous people in the conflicts that occurred in the region of Rio da Prata, from the year 1810 onwards. At the first signs of conflict, the authorities involved were concerned about obtaining the support of these subjects, using written communications in “native languages” (quéchua, aimara and guarani), expeditions and offering benefits and access to resources and positions previously not intended for indigenous people. Secondly, the article tries to demonstrate, through the documentation the active role played by the indigenous in the circulation of revolutionary ideas and principles in a frontier space such as former guarani-jesuit missions. In this sense, I argue that they also acted as “interpreters”, facilitating the dialogue of the ideals of political modernity with the indigenous communities. The docmentation consulted are letters between military and political authorities, as well as reports from travelers.
