The “caboclos” of the Island and the ways to think about afroindigenism in bumba meu boi from Maranhão

Abstract

This article discusses the possibilities of considering bumba meu boi from Maranhão as an Afro-indigenous manifestation. The starting point for this investigation emerges from recent research based on the analysis of documents regarding the perception of play today and the different uses that are made of it. From the perspective proposed here, bumba meu boi would historically allow articulations between blacks and indigenous people, without, however, representing a supposed racial mixture, as pointed out by folklorists, such as Mário de Andrade.
