Between the crown and the sword
black experiences at the end of the Monarchy and the beginning of the Republic between Recife and the Capital of the Republic (1880-1895)
Abstract
This article investigates the transition from the Empire to the Republic based on news published in periodicals from the capital of the then province of Pernambuco (Recife), as well as newspapers published in the capital of the Republic during its early years. These news indicate, on the one hand, the changes arising with the end of slavery approaching, on the other hand the slavery mentality resistance. Meanwhile, the periodicals of the young republic as well as those of the now state of Pernambuco communicated the violence of the regime that was urged, particularly against the ex-enslaved and their descendants. For these, the stigma for been black, mixed race, almost white and poor became the "preferred" victims of the new regime.
