Abstract

This article analyzes the role of midwives, the regulation of this profession and the consequent conflict with medical knowledge in Recife during the first half of the 19th century. Based on laws such as the Code of Postures of the City Council of Recife (1831), the Collection of Laws of the Empire of Brazil (1832), the Instruction of the President of the Province of March 30, 1841 and the Law of N. 87 of May 6, 1840, and periodicals such as the Diario de Pernambuco, O Carapuceiro and the Annaes da Medicina Pernambucana, we sought to understand how the regulation of the healing arts affected the practices of women who gave birth in the capital of Pernambuco during the period defined for analysis.
