The indigenous people and the centenary of Italian immigration in the newspaper O Pioneiro:
“Images of a century” (1973-1974)
Abstract
The press is one of the important spaces for understanding the discussions, perceptions and concerns of a given place in a period of time. The research aims to analyze the discourse used to refer to indigenous peoples in the period that comprises the celebrations of the Centenary of Italian Immigration, in a print from the city of Caxias do Sul - RS. The analysis of the column “Images of a century”, signed by Mário Gardelin and which circulated in the newspaper O Pioneiro, aimed to remember this period of the arrival of Italian immigrants in the region and is useful to think about what these “Indians” were — portrayed in the newspaper — inhabitants of this space; From the Critical Discourse Analysis, we realized that, as interesting as paying attention to who these indigenous people are, it is possible to reflect on what marks we can still perceive of these constructions today.
