Abstract

This paper aims, from Environmental History, to discuss the social uses of the sea in Piauí from 1920 to 1940. When leafing through newspapers and books by memorialists in Parnaíba, a seaside city in Piauí, I observed that local groups used to go to the beach intending to cure illnesses or during recreation seasons. From the 1920s onwards, maritime vacationing and contact with the beach landscape gradually became more frequent due to the rail link from Parnaíba to Amarração, currently Luís Correia. Historical records indicate that the wealthier classes, mainly, "invaded" the beach, making it a place of practices of social distinction. In order to understand the construction of habits, in addition to the multiple ways of interacting and giving meaning to nature, this text was constructed from local periodicals that circulated in the mentioned period and from autobiographical written memories.
