The Brazilian coast is characterized by wide geological and geomorphological diversity, with several deltaic and estuarine systems. In this context, in terms of supply and sedimentary dynamics, the Doce river delta, located in the northern region of the state of Espírito Santo, where the study area is located, stands out. Linked to this sedimentological diversity and to eustatic variations that have occurred in the last thousands of years, some deposits have characteristics that differs from what should be obtained from the current hydrodynamic regime, presenting differentiated granulometries and textures, being classified in some works as relict sediments. Thus, in order to identify these relict sediments, the present work evaluated the main morphological and textural characteristics of the sediments in the area, using techniques and criteria applied with a binocular magnifying glass and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). From the analyses, especially the degree of roundness and textural features, it was possible to identify the relict sediments and verify the geographic location of these deposits, interpreting that it was a Doce river paleosystem, with highly energetic characteristics at the time, highlighting the neotectonic and eustatic connotations for the northern region of the state.
