Abstract

The goal of this article is to examine the several activities of the Indians in the field of the chapels in the Capitany of São Vicente, during the seventeenth-century. In this context, these chapels, administrated by religious orders as well by landlords, had concentrated hundreds of Indians brought from the “sertão” and, eventually, preserved indigenous practices, knowledges, identities and cultural traditions.
