Indigenous urban settlements: considerations on the case of the Javari Valley indigenous people in Atalaia do Norte

OBSERVAÇÕES SOBRE O CASO DOS INDÍGENAS DO VALE DO JAVARI EM ATALAIA DO NORTE (AMAZONAS,BRASIL)

Abstract

This article is the result of an ethnographic research carried out with Marubo, Mayoruna, Kanamari and Matis Indians from the Javari Valley Indigenous Land, who live in the city of Atalaia do Norte. The place chosen for the development of the research was the alley Júlio Maurício, where I carried out field work by means of participant observation and collection of testimonies. In recent years, the movement of indigenous people from this indigenous land has increased and has even caused some problems in the urban area of the municipality, with the Júlio Maurício alley being one of the recent occupations of indigenous people from Javari Valley. I observed that the indigenous residents of this area came with the objective of studying, learning to speak Portuguese, and because of the lack of school structures; sometimes we criticize without having knowledge and without having dialogue with people, but each one of them has an objective to be reached. In recent years, it is estimated that almost half of the indigenous students of this Indigenous Land have left their villages to study in the city, however, something needs to be done to minimize the problems and create other alternatives, especially for the young people.
