Abstract

The proposal of this ethnographic article is to contribute to the growing field of studies regarding the role of technology in the construction of identities. In this case, the objective is to present and understand how the different skills of the naval military world operate synchronized in order to analyze the constitutive relationship between the crew, the ship and the sea. The protagonists of this research are the non-commissioned officers of the Argentine Navy. They are the specialists on board who become the translators of engines, sonars, radars, cables, machines and anything inside the ship that is not a person. Their technical and operational skills are not only because they know the ship's space they inhabit, but also because they know how to make it operational. As I will show in the following pages, their technical, social and military knowledge makes them a unique community of practice.
