Abstract

This article intends to analyze and discuss the indigenous theme in contemporary times, especially in the school environment, from the extension and teaching project "(R)existences" carried out at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of the Southeast of Minas Gerais, Campus Santos Dumont, who provided the meeting between the Sabuká group from the Kariri-Xocó village and students from the undergraduate course in Mathematics, from the postgraduate course in Pedagogical Practices in Contemporary Education latu sensu, from the Integrated High School and community. The article seeks to problematize issues such as the teaching of indigenous themes in the school environment and teacher training, the romanticization of indigenous culture and the permanence of stereotypes about native peoples, ethnocentrism and Law 11.645/08. For this, it used methodologically the document analysis and the evaluation of the participants of the extension events for data collection. It was found that the educational institution should promote the encounter of diversities, through the exercise of dialogue, allowing to acquire knowledge of the other. It is only through the promotion of these meetings that the school manages to democratize teaching and the school space.
