A TRAMA DO BORDADO

UM EXERCÍCIO DE COMPARAÇÃO MÍTICA

Authors

Abstract

Being an inseparable part of innumerable societies´ life and thought, myths take to the extreme some notions as otherness and difference. For this reason, mythological studies raise important theoretical questions to Anthropology as a whole, especially to ethnologists and all those who deals with human though, artistic or religious issues. Comparing two distinguished mythical sets, in different ethnographical contexts – a group of indigenous artists from Western Amazonia and the cult of an African deity in Brazil – this article resumes some investigative tools to analyze the internal logics and the transformations of that stories in several artistic or expressive codes. By doing so, we intend to revisit the problem of anthropological comparison, re-evaluating the differentiation between us and them - between Amerindian societies and societies that worship ancestors - as it has been established by Brazilian indigenous ethnology recently. This article pays homage to the sixtieth anniversary of the release of the first volume of Lévi-Strauss's “Mythologiques” and is therefore a compliment and, hopefully, a proposal to renew the science and methods bequeathed by this author.
