The (im)possible choices, values and the fight for survival in the context of the Nazi genocide during World War II - Abstract: In the context of the Nazi genocide during World War II, the main purpose of this article is to examine the paradox of a person going voluntarily to a concentration camp. The article’s main personage is a German Jewish woman who went voluntarily first to Theresienstadt and then to Auschwitz and includes also the stories of a few other women who had similar experience within the Nazi’s persecution and mass murder contexts. We attempt to show how the attempt to survive can be accompanied by actions of solidarity, affection and family protection. The analysis is based on the framework of rational action, formulated by the German sociologist Max Weber, which seeks to demonstrate the rationality of joining voluntarily the transport to a labor camp or death camp based on the desire to live (purpose) and affective values and solidarity to other people (rational action with reference to values).
