Hebrew Literature and the Biblical Intertext - Abstract: This article analyses the development of the use of expressions, quotations, allusions and references from the texts of the Hebrew Bible in the development of a secular literature in Hebrew. Departing from the origins of the profane lyrical poetry composed in Hebrew in Andalusia, during the Golden Century, it discusses the origins of modern Hebrew literature in the XVIII century Germany and then proceeds to examine the development of this literature in the XIX century in Eastern and Central Europe. In the XX century, the name of S. Y. Agnon appears as the undisputed master in the art of playing with the biblical text, in so far as he employs fragments of the tradition with ironic purposes in his works. The Bible, by means of its references, creates a hidden text, as it were, surrounding all Hebrew literature and multiplying its dimensions. This hidden dimension, however, will disappear among authors for whom Hebrew was a mother-tongue, and not a language reserved to sacred, metaphysical realms.
