From David to Émile, from the subjective forename to the objective forename: Contribution from the sociology of first names to the question of Durkheim’s Jewish identity - Abstract: In this article, I present the results of an extensive research on the two first names of Durkheim. I begin with a review of literature on the subject, comparing the different proposed thesis, many of which consider that there was a voluntary change of first name. According to this perspective, by exchanging his first names, Durkheim would have reinforced his distance to the Judaism of his ancestors (specially his father, who was a Rabbi). Differently, taking new documents and data into account, I propose that Durkheim did not ‘change’ his first name. In fact, according to the census records of 1891 and 1896 in Talence and of 1901 in Bordeaux, he calls himself ‘David’ (1891 and 1806), then ‘Émile’ (1901) – the marital status having no influence on his decision. On the other hand, it is clear that, in the consciousness of Durkheim, the precedence of ‘Émile’ to ‘David’ imposes itself as an objective fact. Based on these data, I try to examine the complex relationship of Durkheim with his Jewish identity and to propose new hypotheses that might explain his ‘decision’ to no longer include ‘David’ on his publications since 1901. To this purpose, i.e., to explain this ‘personal choice’, I consider a set of events, including the Dreyfus Affair (1894-1906).
