The model for human nature, ethical universalism and democratic ideals in Spinoza - Abstract: According to the historian Isaac Deutscher, Spinoza belongs to the tradition of ‘the non-Jewish Jews’ who tried to transcend the particular boundaries of Judaism and to formulate a universalistic human perspective. Like every philosophical thesis, the defense of this universalistic perspective is not free from metaphysical, epistemological, ethical and political difficulties. In Spinoza’s case, these difficulties manifest themselves when we try to understand how to accord his thesis that reason is able to formulate a universal ethical norm with other central tenets of his system. In this article, I propose to discuss these difficulties in order to defend the attribution of a coherent conception of ethical universalism to Spinoza, and to indicate how this conception reflects itself in the privilege accorded to the democratic ideal in his political thought.
