Exerting the positions of province presidency and of the commander in chief of the legalist forces in the province, Caxias was not only a military strategist on battlefield, but also an important articulator of the political negotiations which reached the Ponche Verde agreement, result of the many interests clashes between province and centre of the Empire. Based on the historic documents and on the diversity of bibliography about this issue, the text intends to demonstrate that Caxias had been a main character and a fundamental actor in the organization of the Empire’s interests aiming at the tensions on the platine area over the Ragamuffin War pacification process, between 1842 and 1845.
