O Doutor Voronoff de Mendes Fradique
Resumo
O presente artigo trata da repercussão literária da visita do célebre médico judeu Serge Voronoff ao Brasil por ocasião das Jornadas Médicas em junho de 1928. Mesmo antes de sua visita médica ao País, o escritor e médico Dr. Madeira de Freitas – cujo pseudônimo era Mendes Fradique – escreveu um romance em torno das novas e surpreendentes perspectivas da medicina moderna. Assim, a obra “Doutor Voronoff” (1926) antecipa para o imaginário do leitor brasileiro as possíveis consequências da cirurgia de rejuvenescimento propostas pelo médico russo. Aponta-se, ainda, a relação da imagem literária de Voronoff com os ideários de antissemitismo e de eugenia que se espalhavam no Brasil e no mundo na primeira metade do século XX.
Mendes Fradique’s Dr. Voronoff - Abstract: The present article is about the literary repercussion of the visit that the celebrated Jewish doctor Serge Voronoff to Brazil during the Medical Journey in June 1928. Even before his visit to the country, the writer and doctor Madeira de Freitas – whose pseudonym was Mendes Fradique – had written a novel about the new and surprising perspectives of the modern medicine. Thus, the book "Doctor Voronoff" (1926) antecipates for the imaginary of the Brazilian reader the possible consequences of the surgery of rejuvenation proposed by the Russian doctor. It is also pointed out the relation between the literary picture of Voronoff and the ideas of anti-Semitism and eugeny that spreaded throughout Brazil and the whole world in the first half of the 20th century.
