Da violência à religião: ida e volta
Resumo
O autor examina como historiador a tese normalmente aceita segundo a qual a religião, de modo particular na sua forma monoteísta, está na origem do redobramento da violência (guerras civis, mas também conflitos internacionais) no mundo contemporâneo, principalmente desde o desaparecimento da União Soviética. Ao reconhecer a presença histórica, mais ou menos forte em certas épocas, do fator religioso entre as causas da violência, ele defende a tese segundo a qual a religião não é a causa única, nem mesmo a causa decisiva dessa violência coletiva. Coletando seus exemplos de preferência no mundo cristão, ele afirma que as guerras balcânicas (1991-2001) não são guerras religiosas e que a religião desempenha nelas, quando muito, um papel de "marcador" de identidade.
From violence to religion: comings and goings - Abstract: The author takes a historian’s approach to the currently accepted theory that religion, especially monotheism, is responsible for renewed violence in the contemporary world (both civil wars and international conflicts) after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. While recognizing the historical presence, to a greater or a lesser degree, of the religious factor among the causes of violence, the author defends the position that religion is not the only, or even the principal cause of that collective violence. Taking examples from the Christian world, he argues that the Balkan wars of 1991-2001 were not religious wars, and that here the role of religion is at most an assertion of identity.
