Abstract

This article aims to analyse how the subject positions itself in the face of the emptiness of das Ding, or the Thing as the foundation of desire. To this end, it uses Michel Foucault's understanding of power, knowledge and ethics in conjunction with the ethics of psychoanalysis presented by Jacques Lacan. Both Foucault and Lacan proposed an ethic in which, through the practices of the self or the prevalence of desire, respectively, the subject could position themselves in relation to the other free from the condition of submission. In Seminar 7 (1969/70) Lacan used the metaphor of the empty vase as an opening for new artistic creations, linking subjectivation and desire as an ethical cause. This connection, which points to the powerful place of emptiness, will make it possible to reflect on the function of sublimation for the subject in the face of das Ding as the foundation of desire.
