ALMADA NEGREIROS AND SENCIONALIST THEATER: REFLETIONS ON PIECES “ANTES DE COMEÇAR” AND “O PÚBLICO EM CENA” OF ALMADA NEGREIROS

Abstract

This article tries to make some considerations about the sensationalist theater Almada Negreiros, especially the pieces “Antes de Começar” and “O Público em Cena”. We demonstrate the characteristics that determine the sensationalism, although literary-artistic concept developed by Fernando Pessoa, and how Almada Negreiros appropriates this concept and applies it in the construction of its parts. Also demonstrated the metatheatre aspects of the two pieces in question. We point out the relations of sensationist theater with the symbolist theater and we highlight aspects of experimentalismo of almadiano theater that characterize the condition of modernity and avant-garde of the early twentieth century.
