One of the most interesting artistic figures of the Italian 20th century, Carmelo Bene created works across various disciplines (theater, cinema, literature, theory, radio and TV) for over 40 years. The article discusses Bene’s tormented relationship with Italian cultural institutions through an analysis of different aspects of his artistic and personal life. This was at the same time very imbricated and ambiguous, since, while openly disdaining cooperation with governmental institutions, throughout his entire career Bene seeked both their financial and public support in order to give expression to his creative impulses.
