Narratives translated in Jardim das Cartas: becomings of Odissi Indian dance in a multimodal interterritory

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to bring out the Indian dance Odissi, as a broad field of work in dialogue developed with poetry and the multiplicity of investigative possibilities of multimodal language. From the corporeality present in the Odissi dance, in a clipping about the existence and erasure of the collective of the devotional Maharis dancers, observed in the exhibition of the documentary Given to Dance (RESS, 1984), I report in this work corporal dramaturgies that transit in the translation of the poetics, both in the multimodal universe, as well as in the literature itself, permeated by my own experience as a research artist in Indian dance. The investigation of this poetics in dance ranges from gestures (mudras) and their re-readings, as well as movement patterns relevant to the Odissi dance, expanding the universe of mythical figures from the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, current Odisha, to possible contemporary inter-territorial dialogues. In this work, it is understood as between territories of becomings of Indian dance the elsewhere present in the multimodal installation Jardim das Cartas, at GAIA, Unicamp Art Gallery, at the University's Institute of Arts.
