S MULHERES BRANCAS DOS HOMENS DA RESISTÊNCIA AFRO-LUSO-BRASILEIRA: UM OLHAR SOBRE AS RELAÇÕES COLONIAIS

Resumo: Inspirado no livro Colour Bar da historiadora Susan Williams sobre a relação “escandalosa” de Seretse Khama, primeiro presidente de Botswana, com a britânica Ruth Williams, este artigo debruça-se sobre os casamentos inter-raciais de Abdias do Nascimento e Amílcar Cabral com Elisa Larkin e Maria Helena, respectivamente, através de cartas e outras fontes, a fim de examinar como estas figuras centrais de movimentos anti-coloniais e/ou de justiça racial conciliaram tais relações íntimas com suas ideologias anti-hegemônicas. Questões a considerar incluem as seguintes: Como é que estas relações se enquadram dentro de narrativas de excepcionalismo racial do Brasil, do colonialismo português (de maneira a contestar ou a reproduzi-las), e do mundo lusófono mais amplo, e como estas narrativas são recordadas hoje? Representam estas relações uma forma de expurgação da culpa branca pós-colonial enquanto reproduzem uma ordem socio-racial vigente?

Abstract: Inspired by historian Susan Williams’ book Colour Bar on the “scandalous” relationship of Seretse Khama, first president of Botswana, with the British Ruth Williams, this article focuses on the inter-racial marriages of Abdias do Nascimento and Amílcar Cabral with Elisa Larkin and Maria Helena, respectively, through letters and other sources, with the purpose of examining how these main figures of anti-colonial movements and/or racial justice were able to reconcile such intimate relationships with their anti-hegemonic ideologies. The following questions are being considered: How can these relationships be perceived in the narratives’ framework of Brazilian racial exceptionalism, Portuguese colonialism (in a way to counteract or reproduce them), and the greater Lusophone world, and how these narratives are remembered today? Do these relationships represent a way of purging the post-colonial white guilt while they reproduce the social-racial order?
