CORPOS VIOLENTADOS NO PERÍODO ESCRAVOCRATA
Resumo
Resumo: O artigo investiga os aparelhos utilizados no período da escravidão, no Brasil, como forma de “correção” ou de castigo físico dos escravos. Parte da leitura do conto “Pai contra mãe”, de Machado de Assis, detendo-se na passagem em que o narrador cita alguns desses aparelhos e na caracterização da personagem principal da trama, Cândido Neves, um caçador de escravos fugitivos. O artigo tem por objetivo refletir sobre as atrocidades do período escravocrata no Brasil, à luz de teóricos como Lilia Moritz Schwarcz, Heloisa Starling, Darcy Ribeiro, entre outros, para denunciar atrocidades do passado que, ainda, encontram eco no presente.

Abstract: This article investigates the devices used during the slavery period in Brazil as a form of “correction” or physical punishment of slaves. It begins with a reading of the short story “Pai contra mãe” by Machado de Assis, focusing on the passage in which the narrator mentions some of these devices and on the characterization of the main character in the story, Cândido Neves, a hunter of runaway slaves. The article aims to reflect on the atrocities of the slavery period in Brazil, in the light of theorists such as Lilia Moritz Schwarcz, Heloisa Starling, Darcy Ribeiro, among others, in order to denounce atrocities of the past that still find echo in the present.
