Abstract

The occupation process of the western region of Santa Catarina began in the first decades of the 20th century and consolidated in the second half of the same century. Between 1940 and 1990 occurred many transformations in economic-productive structure of region, which will serve as a basis for the formation and production chain of the different agribusiness of animal and plant origins. The objective this article is investigate the characteristics of the occupation process, the role of the small mercantile production and the relevance of agribusiness in the structure productive in the base of West region of Santa Catarina. The combination of this process, the genesis of occupation process accompanied, through the development of small mercantile production. Whit this, the practice of local commercial relations advanced for regional, national and international comercial relations. The role of technical progress and the resources spent by the State were fundamental for the development of the regional productive structure.
