In this paper I analyse the first hundred days of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s new foreign policy. With that in mind I apply the historical method grounded on Brazilian concepts of International Relations such as autonomy and pragmatic equidistance. I intend to explain inductively current events by means of Brazilian foreign policy historical structures of the 1930s and the 1960s. I hypothesize that the environmental agenda must be seen as the new foreign policy’s pivot because it may support other Brazilian international agendas. When it comes to the War in Ukraine, I argue that Brazil’s position of equidistance is the best suited to pursue national interests defined in terms of development. I affirm that equidistance is rooted not only in diplomatic traditions but is also in tune with the principle of non-intervention. However, I argue that Lula’s “peace club” proposal may jeopardize such equidistance if he cannot help exposing contradictions in his statements.
