By means of a cross-sectional study, sixteen elderly people with dementia diagnosis were analyzed. They had 80.1 years old in average and nine of them were women. All of the caretakers accompanying the patients were close family members and they were submitted to an adapted questionnaire regarding the perception of a hearing related restriction of participation (an adapted version of HHIE). In addition, the elderly’s audiometry exams were consulted whenever available. By analyzing the results, it was possible to point out the existence of factors that restrict social participation and lead to emotional difficulties as a consequence of hearing limitations (hearing handicap) in elderly people with dementia, under the point of view of their caretakers. Significant connections between the hearing handicap as perceived by the caretaker and the audiometry results were also established, showing that the higher the total score found in the questionnaires, the higher was the patient’s hearing loss degree.

keywords

Hearing.
