The experience of an indigenous psychology student during the pandemic in Maranduba settlement
Abstract
The present work represents an autoethnography crossing the experiences of the first author, a karaja indigenous Psychology student, during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maranduba settlement (Santa Maria das Barreiras/PA). Crossing aspects from the culture, traditions, and beliefs fro the inỹ karaja from the Maranduba settlement, we describe aspects of the psychological distress produced by the pandemic in the karaja people. The text starts with the notion of “disease” in its diverse dimensions in the karaja culture, incuding its cosmogonic role, its role in the fissile character of the creation of new settlements by the karaja people, and how diseases cross the very history of the Maranduba settlement in the image of Benta Thuary Deru. These factors help us to understand the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic had on the karaja people in the Maranduba settlement from a psychological point of view.
