In the anthropological networks of de Manchester School: Reminiscences of an intellectual journey

Abstract

In this article Peter Fry recalls his anthropological training: the undergraduate course at Cambridge University in 1960-63, research in Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) where he was brought into contact with the Manchester School, and the defence of his doctorate (Zezuru Mediums: Spirit Possession and the articulation of consensus among the Zezuru of Southern Rhodesia) supervised by Mary Douglas at University College, London in 1969. The Manchester School played an important role in consolidating a renewed ethnographic method based on situational analysis and the extended case method in order to meet the challenge of doing anthropology in situations of industrialization, and urbanization in late colonial Africa. In this text, Peter Fry describes the network of intellectual relations that were part of his training in England and Africa.
