Abstract: In 1972, in order to celebrate Erico Verissimo’s (1905-1975) forty years of literary life, his debut book, Fantoches, is relaunched. Alongside the original 1932 texts are six other short stories published throughout his fictional production: “The Hands of My Son” (1942), “The Ship of Shadows” (1942), “The General’s Daydreams” (1942), “Autumn Squirrels” (1959), “Sonata” (1959) and “The Bridge” (1959) (Verissimo, 2007). These  are the narratives that we take into account in this investigation, which aims to examine Erico Verissimo’s short stories in the light of a series of theoretical propositions presented by Argentine writer Julio Cortázar (1914-1984) in “Some aspects of the short story” (Cortázar, 2006). Through the cortazian theoretical lens we observe how “certain constants [and] certain values” (Cortázar, 2006: 149) can be applied to Verissimo’s brief narrative in the 1940s and 1950s. Therefore, we chose as analysis topics: the differentiation between short story and novel, the definition of the good short story writer, the meaningful short story, the choice of theme, the relationship between short story writer and reader, and the mastery of the craft by the author. In the end, we have a fruitful reading grid, which, by focusing on Erico Verissimo’s short story, has the means to make it more accessible to both specialized critics and the general public.
