Pre-surgery complications associeted with impactions of third inferior molars

Abstract


The objective of this study is to verify the frequency of the complications related to the retention of third inferior molars. The data were obtained on the patient records from the the Oral and Maxillofacial Treatment Center of the Surgery and Orthopedics Departament of the Dentistry College of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The items examined were sex, age, race, presence or absence of retained third inferior molars, retention classification and complications associated with the retention. The cases of the third inferior molar retention were selected, and the complications related to the retention were collected and related with sex, age, race and retention’s classification. 366 teeth were detected. There were 110 cases with complications and 256 without. Pericoronaritis was the most frequent complication found, related to tooth 38 (60%) and tooth 48 (63%), followed by cyst, root resorption and caries. Pericoronaritis was the predominant complication (61.8%) being more frequent in females (58.8%). The prophylactic extraction of third inferior molars is considered the recommended treatment.
