O MODERNISMO DO NÃO: LIMA BARRETO, CARETA E FON-FON DIANTE DO FUTURISMO PAULISTA

Resumo: O movimento futurista não alcançou, no Rio de Janeiro, repercussão similar à que obteve em São Paulo, quando foi divulgado por intelectuais como Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. Em periódicos como Careta e Fon-Fon, aquele projeto vanguardista foi matéria de blagues e anedotas. Um dos mais ostensivos adversários do modismo futurista foi Lima Barreto, então colaborador de Careta. Suas crônicas traduzem a revolta do escritor diante da presunção de que o Futurismo era desconhecido no Brasil e, especialmente, no Rio de Janeiro. Critica igualmente o comportamento subalterno dos intelectuais paulistas diante de vultos e ideias vindas de fora do país.

Abstract: The futurist movement did not achieve in Rio de Janeiro the same repercussion it had in São Paulo, when it was promoted by intellectuals such as Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. In periodicals such as Careta and Fon-Fon, that avant-garde project was the subject of blagues and jokes. One of the most ostensible opponents of the futurist fashion was Lima Barreto, who collaborated with Careta at the time. His chronicles reflect the writer's revolt at the presumption that Futurism was unknown in Brazil, and especially in Rio de Janeiro. He also criticizes the subordinate behavior of São Paulo's intellectuals in face of figures and ideas imported from abroad.
