The role of women in Herzog, by Saul Bellow - Abstract: This article aims to analyze the role of female characters in the novel Herzog, by Saul Bellow. Although its main character is Moses Herzog, a man, women play a key role in this work of Saul Bellow. In addition to a divorce being the driving force of the novel, in the sense that this event is what leaves Moses in the mental state that dictates his actions throughout the novel, the female characters are a continuation Herzog’s feelings regarding Jewish identity. Moses tries to recover in romantic relationships different aspects of the relationship he had with his mother. Here, the mother figure and therefore the female altogether are not summed up in affection and motherhood security, but these aspects are mixed with Judaism itself and its transmission.
